'BIG OIL', THE CHRISTCHURCH QUAKE & NEO-FASCISM AOTEOROA 2014: WHALES AND DOLPHINS PAYING THE PRICE

'BIG OIL', THE CHRISTCHURCH QUAKE & NEO-FASCISM AOTEAROA 2014:
WHALES AND DOLPHINS PAYING THE PRICE

NOTE FROM JEFF:  I first put together this perspective on the Christchurch quake scenario in March of 2011. All of this information is from main-stream media sources in New Zealand. What initially keyed me off was noticing the Orwellian-named 'U.S.-New Zealand Global Partnership Forum' taking place in Christchurch on that exact date. Later on, when I had a look at who Anadarko's board of directors were, the name Paula Reynolds as Director of BAE Systems, who had just contracted the Phase 2 Upgrade of HAARP jumped out at me like a bolt of plasma from an ionospheric heater. The 'modus operandi' here is that of 'technetronic- and 'tectonic-' warfare as envisioned by Zbigniew Brzezinski, who is Obama's top national security advisor. New Zealand has more hydro-carbons than the North Sea or Saudi Arabia, and the Key administration, who has granted themselves dictatorial powers in the wake of the Christchurch quake, has invited every hydro-carbon and mining enterprise on the planet to come and do business here. Key et al. have made it very clear that NO 'environmental consideration'...for example, the critically endangered Maui's dolphins...will stand in the way of OPEN FOR BUSINESS. At the time of this writing, unbelievable numbers of cetaceans continue to strand all around New Zealand. This posting explains clearly what is going on here in "100% CLEAN AND GREEN NEW ZEALAND."

The escalating invasion of New Zealand by 'big oil' is waging a war on cetaceans throughout the Aotearoan EEZ, fifth largest in the world.

"Something is happening in New Zealand and no one wants to talk about it...Our question is: what exactly is going on? It is indifference, lack of training and education, or is it A BLATANT COVER-UP...where anthropogenic noise events are DELIBERATELY not mentioned, not investigated and actively distanced from live stranding events?"

Clearly the latter, to divert attention from New Zealand's 'hydro-carbon oligarchy.'

The Christchurch quake was the pivotal turning point in this war of ecocide, and the moment when 'big oil' seized control of New Zealand. The cetacean community is bearing the brunt of this relentless assault.

People need to know what they are up against. The Christchurch quake was deliberately engineered to enable a neo-fascist take-over of the NZ government, to secure the compliance of previously uncooperative decision-makers, the goal being the institution of dictatorial powers to the Key administration whose primary agenda is selling off NZ's natural resources to international corporate entities, brokered by Goldman-Sachs. Here is the evidence about the Christchurch quake. You be the judge; you reflect on what has happened since February 22, 2011. Look around at what is happening throughout NZ's huge EEZ: a total reversal of NZ's traditionally conservative environmental policies in favour of wide-spread ecological destruction and invasion by every hydro-carbon and mining corporation on the planet, spending $23 million for a new flag while the Maui's dolphins become an international symbol of public apathy, greed and delusion in '100% CLEAN AND GREEN AOTEAROA'

The Christchurch Quake as New Zealand’s ‘9/11’

Massive evidence exists that the Christchurch quakes were not ‘natural’ but premeditated acts of tectonic warfare involving HAARP and related technologies. I had been told for years, even by geologists, that the Christchurch area was one of the most geologically stable parts of New Zealand; the day before the 22 February quake over 1000 military personnel conducted an operation just south of Christchurch, the first such event in many years; NZ navy vessels were present in Lyttelton harbor the day before the quake, and sailors supposedly told people that ‘we’re here for the quake’; in less than a week CERRA legislation was passed for ALL of New Zealand giving the Key administration dictatorial powers, precluding legislative oversight and judicial accountability.

On 21-22 February a US-NZ Global Partnership Forum was happening, and present in Christchurch were several ‘geo-terrorism’ luminaries, three with US Navy backgrounds (the Navy is prime operator of HAARP, along with the Air Force) and all of them with direct connections to recent examples of the ‘new paradigm’ of covert war-fighting disguised as natural disasters, industrial accidents, or terrorist attacks. Present that day were

Admiral Thad Allen: former deputy director of FEMA, ‘national incident commander’ for both Hurricane Katrina and the BP-Gulf disaster, currently senior analyst for the Rand Corporation and think-tank Booz-Allen-Hamilton (defense and intelligence consultants), and on the NSF ‘blue ribbon’ Antarctica panel (Ian Brzezinski, son of Zbigniew, a master-mind of 9/11, architect of tectonic warfare, and Obama’s top national security advisor, works for Booz-Allen-Hamilton as well)

Richard Armitage: former Deputy Secretary of State, official coordinator of America’s response to 9/11, and co-author of PNAC document ‘Rebuilding America’s Defenses’ which called for a ‘new Pearl Harbour’ to catalyze a revolution in military spending. Member of Council on Foreign Relations.

Timothy Manning: Deputy Director of FEMA, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, a ‘homeland security’ army that shows up at disaster sites before they happen and treats victims and refugees like prisoners of war.
Kurt Campbell: Assistant Secretary of State for Asia and Pacific Affairs, met with high-level financial people in Japan only days before Fukushima and is known to have close ties to the Rockefeller family. Also a member of Trilateral Commission.

There’s more. Also in Christchurch that day was a contingent of US Congressmen who comprised a committee on Asia-Pacific Affairs. They suddenly departed Christchurch about two hours before the quake happened and flew to Wellington, where they joined Prime Minister John Key in his office and were there when the quake happened.
Among them was Rep. Kevin Brady (R-Texas) who is known to represent ‘big oil’ and who is on record as having received at least tens of thousands of dollars in contributions from Anadarko Petroleum, a Texas oil company whose permit to conduct geophysical exploration off the Canterbury coast was granted less than four hours after the Christchurch quake, after being in the ‘queue’ for months or even years!

Anadarko Petroleum and HAARP

And there’s even MORE. Anadarko is growing by leaps and bounds, and with its recent merger with Union Pacific Resources, they shuffled their board of directors. The new CEO is named Walker, and is a banker by profession. An ‘independent director’ of Anadarko now is Charles Goodyear, who was the CEO of BHP-Billiton (the world’s biggest mining company). But when you look at who the board of directors was two years ago, when the Christchurch quakes happened, a very clear connection between Anadarko and HAARP becomes visible, and not just HAARP per se, but also the entire ‘new world order’ agenda of space domination, ‘disaster capitalism’, resource control and depopulation.

Their board of directors at that time included

James Hackett: CEO of Anadarko, also a director of Halliburton (mega-‘war, inc.’ company who constructs infrastructure for US military bases and oil companies, former CEO was Dick Cheney, a master-mind of 9/11 and PNAC). Also a member of Trilateral Commission (founded by Brzezinski for Rockefeller) Hackett happened to be in Brazil with Obama, CEO’s of Westinghouse and General Electric (manufacturers of nuclear reactors), and Madeline Albright (advocate of genocide) at the time of the Fukushima disaster. Hackett also met privately with John Key in New Zealand in Nov. 2011.

Luke Corbett: former director of Kerr-McGee, notorious plutonium reprocessing company based in Oklahoma, currently owned by Anadarko. Karen Silkwood worked for Kerr-McGee and was murdered for her attempts to expose plutonium contamination of employees there.

Peter Geren: former secretary of both US Army and US Air Force (operates HAARP along with Navy)
Paula Reynolds: director of BAE Systems, huge ‘defense contractor’ specializing in high-tech electronics, just happened to build the Phase 2 upgrade for HAARP

General Kevin Chilton: former Air Force test pilot, space shuttle commander, head of US Space Command and of STRATCOM, the central command for all of America’s nuclear weapons. In addition, he was or is the primary commander for US ‘cyber-security’ and is a director of Orbital Systems, involved in space surveillance and commercial satellites. As shuttle commander, Chilton may have participated in experiments relating to HAARP involving the firing of the craft’s engines to inject chemicals into the ionosphere.

I’m giving you an array of colours with which to paint your own picture, but in a nut-shell it looks to me as if the ‘new world order’ master-minds have had their sites on New Zealand for a long time. Traditionally, New Zealand was not the ‘player’ that the Anglo-American power elite wanted her to be, beginning with David Lange’s anti-nuclear stance in the mid-1980’s, but has long been recognized in these circles as a land of immense but untapped natural resources, a beautiful place to ‘inhabit’, and as a strategically-located stepping-stone to Antarctica, Earth’s only polar land-mass and home to astronomical quantities of mineral resources, buried beneath miles of ice. Note that HAARP and other ‘ionospheric heaters’ of its kind tend to be located in polar regions, due to the accessibility of the Earth’s magnetic field at those latitudes.

Being an ‘ally’ to Amerika, Inc., but reticent nonetheless, New Zealand didn’t become the target of the ‘humanitarian liberation’ blitzkriegs rained on Islamic nations like Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya and Syria but was instead gifted an experimental ‘friendly take-over’…her own version of ‘9/11.’ Scientifically-premeditated artificial earth-quakes were created using HAARP and related technologies. Key members of the New Zealand government, business and diplomatic sectors were ‘invited’ to participate. Kevin ‘big oil’ Brady was in Key’s office when the quake happened, acting on behalf of Anadarko. “Well, gentlemen….do you believe us now? Either grant our Canterbury exploration permit or Wellington will be next. We’ll give you the rest of our wish-list later.”

HAARP and related technologies are what make the ‘new paradigm’ of covert ‘warfare’ possible. The ‘new world order’ visionaries, the US navy and other military entities, the bankers, the CEO’s, the heads of state and prime ministers and presidents, are all in bed together and all share a common ‘mentality’ based on greed and corruption. Life means nothing to these ‘people’.

Anadarko Petroleum is of particular interest, not only because of their direct connection to HAARP and covert ‘technetronic’ warfare, or their blatant military-industrial fusion, but also because of their growing and increasingly pernicious presence in New Zealand. Anadarko had a 25% ownership of the BP-Macondo offshore project that exploded in April of 2010 and continues to contaminate the entire Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic Ocean. Again, solid and credible exists that this explosion was not an accident but was deliberately engineered to create profits for ‘disaster capitalists’ and to use the loop current and gulf stream to distribute the pollutants as widely as possible…an act of environmental warfare for the purpose of accelerating depopulation. Reports came in that just moments before the explosion, all the electricity cut out on the platform and strange glowing lights were seen all around the area. This would be indicative of a ‘technetronic weapons’ operation to trigger the explosion, using HAARP and satellites to deliver the necessary energy perhaps in the form of an EMP or ‘electromagnetic pulse.’

Many researchers also believe that these weapons systems were involved in engineering the Fukushima disaster, not to mention recent devastating quakes in Haiti, Indonesia and Chile, as well as the ‘controlled demolition’ of the World Trade Centers on 9/11…the ‘new Pearl Harbour’ that PNAC et al. had called for. The Christchurch quake was New Zealand’s ‘9/11’ and Aotearoa is rapidly on her way to becoming an Anglo-American military outpost, mine site, and base-camp for ‘big oil’, just like her big sister Australia.

Anadarko is central to all of the above. This state-of-the-art paragon of ‘new world order’ corporate entities has direct access to and control of HAARP and all that entails, and is now in the process of rapidly expanding its off-shore and deep-water drilling activities all around New Zealand, not only in the Taranaki basin but most recently in the Pegasus basin off the coast of Kaikoura, home of New Zealand’s highest concentration of whales and dolphins. Even without Anadarko’s extremely questionable ‘substrata’, their very presence even as nothing more than a ‘normal oil company’ there should be under close scrutiny by anyone who loves life and cetaceans, not to mention their excruciatingly cosy relationship with brand new Minister of Energy Simon Bridges. Before we proceed, however, allow me to share some delusion-shattering information on the reality of petroleum.

Remember that HAARP was originally conceived of by an oil company, Atlantic-Richfield who formed ARCO in the early 1990's.

NOTE FROM JEFF:  This time last year I was living in and around the little town of Pahoa, in the Puna region of the Big Island of Hawai'i. My experiences with the volcanos was by far the most intense aspect of my time there. I've been really drawn to volcanos since around 2005, when I visited White Island, an active volcano about 50kms off the coast of the north island of New Zealand. Hawai'i Volcanos National Park totally blew me away; the sheer enormity and 'alien-ness' of the landscapes were mind-blowing, plus the awesome raw power of Pele, Gaia's fiery Hawai'ian daughter.

This posting is not an an exercise in vulcanology; to me, the 'coolest' thing about volcanos is not only how HOT they are, but that in a very real sense, they are the way that Mother Earth actually 'gives birth' to new land.

"One of the most active volcanoes on earth, 4,091-foot Kilauea has been erupting almost continuously since 1983. Its outflow produces enough lava to resurface a 20-mile-long, two-lane road every day; as a result, the island’s size has grown by 491 acres over the past two decades. This place is the legendary home of Pele, the fire goddess."

One of the most amazing experiences I had on the Big Island was when my friend and I camped out in a grove of huge eucalyptus trees only a kilometre from the overlook down into the Kilauea crater. As this was in February, we were able to see the Southern Cross in the wee hours of the morning rising over the caldera. Incredibly awe-inspiring.

In June a new lava-flow or 'break out' occurred from the Pu'u O'o vent which is to the east of Kilauea. This flow went beneath the surface for a while and resurfaced a couple weeks ago. In that time it has been steadily advancing directly towards the town of Pahoa. As you would expect, the lava basically follows the path of steepest descent. It's not moving very fast, but recently has been traveling at 15-20 metres per hour.

As I write this now, national news services have picked up this story as of about two days ago. With the lava moves within a few tens of metres of homes, evacuation plans are ready to be enacted.

A field of advancing lava would be a very freaky thing to witness. The night sky is aglow with eery colours, and the sounds I hear are quite spooky, too. Anything the lava comes into contact with is instantly burned up or ignited. So far this has been vegetation, grass in paddocks, forests. But today, as it is approaching civilization, man-made things are burning, like a huge pile of old tires. The smoke and fumes from all this can be quite toxic, as the volcanic emissions alone contain extremely high levels of sulfur compounds.

Power-lines and poles with electrical cables can easily come down in the lava, taking out power and communications. Imagine what could happen when the lava surrounds, for example, an LPG cylinder at someone's house, or if it reaches the service station where underground tanks store tens of thousands of litres of fuel.

I would like to extend my greatest empathy and sympathy for the people and landscapes of the Pahoa area. In times like this, what people are really made of comes to light, and a true sense of community springs to life.

In some ways this can be seen as a 'natural disaster' but I think that a more powerful way to look at it is as a very special and sacred moment in time, where Mother Pele is literally reaching out as she is giving birth...a time of celebration, a rare and wonderful opportunity to witness and be part of such an amazing process. I can't think of anywhere else on Earth one could experience this.  If I were there now, not only would I be trying to help anyone in any way that I could, in between that I'd be right at the lava flow front with my flute and drum, playing music in honour of Pele and her newest-born 'fingers' of the body of Mother Earth.

I am in awe of what is going on there right now, a true spectacle of the beauty and power of nature, totally beyond the control of humanity.

And things could be a lot worse: imagine just how much molten lava the Earth contains? Probably on the order of millions of cubic miles. And it could be coming out a lot faster or even exploding!!! :)

"Although Truchanas and Dombrovskis inspired many subsequent adventurers, conservationists and photographers, there has emerged no 'new Dombrovskis' with the required combination of technical skill, spiritual engagement and aesthetic sensibility to confront Australian voters with the reality of ongoing threats to Tasmanian forests and rivers. It is a significant point, for as Bob Brown explained, 'it was not so much that Truchanas and Dombrovskis recorded national parks, as that national parks followed where they recorded.' "

'BATTLE FOR THE TARKINE' DOCUMENTARY
http://www.throughthetreesandtheforest.com.au/

NOTE FROM JEFF:

I have been visiting and exploring Tasmania since 2001 and have come to know, love, and be adopted by who I truly know as 'the spirit of Tasmania', my favourite region of Australia and where I have spent more time than anywhere else in the Land of Aus.

Ever since 2001 I have been a great admirer of Peter Dombrovskis' work, not only his nature photography but his ecological and environmental activism. I learned the story of his relationship with Olegas Truchanas, himself a wilderness adventurer, photographer, and environmental activist, who inspired Peter to do the same.

In 2008 my former partner Liesbet and I were inspired to make contact with Peter's widow Liz. She invited us to her home on the back side of kunanyi (Mt. Wellington). We gave her a painted rock in honour of our love of Peter's work and also her own major endeavour, West Wind Press, which had made Peter's photographs available to an ever-growing public in the form of the nicest prints, post-cards and calendars of nature that, to this day, are unsurpassed.

I remember asking Liz if she thought that Peter would have switched to or added digital cameras to his range of gear. She reckoned that he probably would have, especially as all his friends had made that transition (although some of them continue to use large-format film cameras).

[NOTE: Several years ago Liz gave me permission to post these images of Peter's photography]

Peter Dombrovskis and Olegas Truchanas are my two biggest 'heroes' of Australia, among the white man. My REAL heroes are of course the indigenous people, the 'First Nations Australians' and the dream-time ancestors; this is another but not unrelated story.

The reason I value their lives and work so much is that I very much share their love of the beauty and power of nature, their motivation to get out and immerse themselves in the wilderness and do their best to capture images of this power and beauty, and, perhaps most significantly, to use their photos to try to inspire the people, of Tasmania, of Australia, of the world, to get active in stopping the increasingly blatant war on nature being conducted by human military-industrial civilization.

They waged an educational campaign in an effort to stop the damming of the amazing alpine Lake Pedder. Unbelievably, the dam went ahead, but their efforts gave birth to the environmental movement in Tasmania and Australia as a whole, and the damming of the Franklin River was aborted.

Truchanas died in 1972 and Dombrovskis in 1996, both alone in the wilds of southwest Tasmania doing what they loved most. Dombrovskis carried Truchanas' torch and created his own publishing company. His work continues to inspire people around the world.

I have been involved in ecological and environmental activities in Tasmania for over 13 years now, and to be honest I think that both Truchanas and Dombrovskis would be absolutely shattered to see what has transpired since they were here.

Hydro-Tasmania or HEC was the first state-sponsored assault on Tasmania's wilderness areas. The battle with the logging industry has been on-going, with MAJOR sectors of Tasmania's unique Gondwanaland-remnant temperate zone old-growth rain forests already decimated by Gunns and other corporate monstrosities.

Only a few months ago a major conflict was arising, just as I arrived in Hobart. The Hodgman (Tasmanian premier) and Abbot (Australian prime minister) administrations had moved to undo the World Heritage classification of approximately 76,000 hectares of old-growth forest primarily in the Florentine Valley.

A vast public out-rage and recommendations by the World Heritage committee managed to stop this, but only a few weeks ago ANOTHER even worse spectre has reared its head, a plan for 'selected species logging...in ALL REGIONAL RESERVES in Tasmania.' This includes over a million hectares of forest.

PLUS, the mining industry is exploding in Tasmania, especially in the very remote northwest wilderness area called the Tarkine. Several new open cut mines have been given the go-ahead. This is a story I will covering in greater detail soon.

I want to congratulate and thank Rob Blakers for his on-going and awesome contributions on behalf of 'the spirit of Tasmania', on his new gallery, AND for putting me in touch with Sydney-based film-maker Julian Knysh who is working on what promises to be an Earth-shaking documentary film 'Battle for the Tarkine' which concerns the conflict between those who are striving to protect Tasmania's florae, faunae and landscapes and the increasingly virulent and active 'anti-green' movement coming out the northwest of Tassie right now.

Rob Blakers and Chris Bell were both mates of Peter Dombrovskis, and I would say that they are by far the closest thing we have to a 'Peter Dombrovskis of today'!

Julian's project, however, has the potential to bring together everything that Truchanas and Dombrovskis were about, historically, photographically, and environmentally, but in a leading-edge modern-day scenario that is unfolding as I write this.

I recently met with Julian at Glebe Books in Sydney and filmed an interview with him that will be broadcast on my 'On the Brink' radio show in the next week or two.

Please consider supporting this extremely important project and check out his web-site and his Facebook page

I LOVE TASMANIA!  I was recently blessed to spend over five months there, reconnecting with many wonderful friends, visiting some really amazing remote wilderness places, and catching up on the leading edge of what is happening in terms of the human warfare on Mother Gondwanaland.

It's not a pretty picture, but there is hope...AND WE NEED YOUR HELP.

'WILDNESS' Excellent ABC doco about Truchanas and Dombrovskis

http://www.abc.net.au/aplacetothink/?#watch/mh_2000/wildness/watchVideo

"Olegas Truchanas and Peter Dombrovskis were perhaps Australia's greatest wilderness photographers. Their work became synonymous with campaigns to protect Tasmania's natural heritage. They shared many things, including a bond that was more like that of father and son. Both came from Baltic Europe and migrated to Tasmania, where their passion for nature became a crusade to save an environment under threat. Both died in the wilderness, doing what they loved, and left a legacy in extraordinary images. Their philosophy was simple and remarkably effective - if people could see the beauty of Australia's wild places then they might be moved to save them."

NOTE: This is a FANTASTIC doco and I strongly suggest that you obtain a copy and watch the entire film

Scott Millwood was conscious of the great landscape photographers Olegas Truchanas and Peter Dombrovskis for most of his life before making his film Wildness. With this one-hour documentary, which recently won the audience award for best documentary at the Sydney Film Festival, Millwood has exposed the epic story of two of Tasmania's major conservation heroes - a story hardly known outside Tasmania until now. The convergence of the two men's lives is almost incredible: both migrated from the ravaged Baltic states after the war, an experience that left their senses open to the pristine, peaceful beauty of their new country; one was a father figure to the other; both became such original and accomplished photographers that their images were used not only to inspire the establishment of a conservation movement in Tasmania and on the mainland but as a weapon in its cause.

Both experienced a sense of terrible failure. The worst was the damming of Lake Pedder - "my Pedder", as Truchanas called the serene high lake with the white shore of which he took hundreds of photographs and which he fought so hard to save.

Both died alone in the wilderness of south-west Tasmania, to which they had devoted their lives. When Truchanas drowned at 49 in 1972 it was Dombrovskis who found him. Then in 1996, when he was only 51, Dombrovskis died of a heart attack on a photographic expedition. Together they left eight children and two stepchildren.

"It is a story that I have known all my life," says Millwood, who was born in Launceston 29 years ago, the year after Lake Pedder was "drowned" and Truchanas died on the Gordon River. "When I researched both their lives in more depth there was such symmetry in them. At times it felt like one life lived twice. The story is so unique and so specific to a place."

http://www.iphf.org/hall-of-fame/peter-dombrovskis/

'An extraordinary aspect about his work was that many of his photographs aided in the campaign that saved the Franklin river in Tasmania from being dammed. Some of Dombrovskis' photographs have also been instrumental in the conservation of various other Tasmanian wild places.

"The pursuit of wilderness and photography are uneasy companions. We go to the wilds to reaffirm our place in the natural scheme of things, to be rejuvenated by contact with elemental forces and to be reminded that the civilized baggage with which we complicate our lives is perhaps not so important to our happiness as the advertising man would claim. Therefore, when my rucksack is already straining at the seems with the essentials of food, shelter and clothing, it seems folly to add a metal box crammed with optical, mechanical and electrical gadgetry."

Deeply attracted to Tasmania's wilderness areas, Truchanas undertook many solitary excursions, on foot and by canoe, into the island's south-west. Black and white and, later, colour photography became the medium through which he expressed his considerable artistic talents; he won prizes in overseas and Australian competitions. In 1952, climbing alone and without support, he reached the summit of Federation Peak. Twice, in December 1954 and February 1958, he travelled down the Serpentine and Gordon rivers from Lake Pedder to Macquarie Harbour in a self-designed kayak, a feat never before accomplished. On 21 January 1956 at Chalmers Church, Launceston, he married with Presbyterian forms Melva Janet Stocks, a clerical typist.
In October 1963 the Tasmanian government decided that the State's south-west was to be opened up to hydro-electric development. The fears of conservationists were realized in 1965 when the premier Eric Reece announced that there would be 'some modification of Lake Pedder National Park', and that the water level of the lake would be raised. Truchanas, placing himself in a difficult position with his employer, gave a series of audio-visual lectures in the Hobart Town Hall and elsewhere in Tasmania, aimed at publicizing the environmental losses that would follow the flooding of the lake. The project went ahead despite the protests. In February 1967 Truchanas's collection of photographs was burnt in the Hobart bushfires that destroyed his home; he immediately set about replacing the lost pictures.

The campaign to save Lake Pedder provided the model for the Franklin campaign, waged between 1976 and1983 as the Tasmanian government was pressured into vacillation between various schemes to dam first the Franklin River, then the Gordon above Olga (involving the inundation of 'The Splits'), then the Gordon below Franklin. The Tasmanian Wilderness Society was formed in 1976, at a meeting at the home of general practitioner Bob Brown. As moves to dam the Franklin gathered momentum, he abandoned his practice and became the Society's full-time voluntary director. Bob Brown realised that in the fight for the Franklin 'there was no better way to get the river to speak for itself than through the lens of Peter Dombrovskis'. When legislation was passed allowing construction to begin on the Franklin dam in 1982,Brown staged a nationwide tour that saw large NO DAM rallies in capital cities. Volunteers hastened to mount blockades in

Tasmania and public figures such as prehistorian DJ Mulvaney laboured to raise public consciousness of the profound cultural, historical and ecological significance of the area at stake - countering Tasmanian Premier Robin Gray's assessment of the Franklin as nothing but a brown ditch, 'leech-ridden' and 'unattractive to the majority'. Dombrovskis's photograph Rock Island Bend, Franklin River, South West Tasmania(1979), selected by Brown from the photographer's large collection, became the lead image of the NO DAMS campaign and one of the most-reproduced of all Australian photographs. Printed in colour above the question 'Would you vote for a party that would destroy this?' it comprised one of this country's most effective ever political advertisements. Further, in large part due to Dombrovskis's remarkable eye for detail - its composition, as Peter Timms has explained, is 'exceptional in its fidelity to European artistic and cultural precedent' - it took root in the collective European-Australian psyche to become, Timms and others believe, a kind of 'religious icon for a new, secular society'. In 1983, the High Court ruled that the Commonwealth Government had the power to prevent the dam from being built.

'When you go out there you don't get away from it all ... you come home to yourself,' Dombrovskis said. He died of heart failure while photographing alone in the Western Arthur Range in southwest Tasmania. Shortly before, he had tried to describe the need he felt, after photographing an object of beauty, 'to make some acknowledgement, a sign of gratitude, perhaps a touch or some act of private communion that would probably appear silly or affected were there someone else to see me.' He wrote that 'my most productive days are when I move through the landscape with an attitude of acceptance.'

To his many admirers, the images he made are imbued with the photographer's respect for the natural world. Although Truchanas and Dombrovskis inspired many subsequent adventurers, conservationists and photographers, there has emerged no 'new Dombrovskis' with the required combination of technical skill, spiritual engagement and aesthetic sensibility to confront Australian voters with the reality of ongoing threats to Tasmanian forests and rivers. It is a significant point, for as Bob Brown explained, 'it was not so much that Truchanas and Dombrovskis recorded national parks, as that national parks followed where they recorded.'
